Employment
Rama First Nation members have worked at a variety of jobs.
Our first jobs were looking after the fish fence years and years
ago. As the community of Rama has grown, job opportunities
have developed related to the smooth running of the village and
economic development. Many people work in administration
and government services, and in emergency services such
as police and fire departments. The elementary school, child
care centre, the Seniors’ Complex, Ramcor Developments, the
Ojibway Bay Marina, and the Black River Wilderness Park are
other sources of employment.
The gas station provides employment for some people, and
small businesses such as Rama Moccasin and Smoke also
provide jobs. These small businesses also provide an opportunity
for the many artists in the community to sell their products.
There are a number of people who work in creative fields in
our community. These include musicians, artists, craftspeople,
videographers, and writers. Arthur Shilling, a renowned First
Nations artist whose works can be found in the McMichael
Gallery, made his home in Rama. His sons, Travis and Bewabon
Shilling, are following in their father’s footsteps.
