Honouring Veterans

Remembering our fallen warriors, this stone sits
                  prominently in our cemetery.

Our cultural background and traditional history are rich and
proud. Alderville members volunteered to serve in the armed
forces at a high rate. We, like many other First Nations people,
participated in great numbers in World War I and World War II.
Often, a greater percentage of our population served than in
                  other Canadian communities.

We continued that military tradition with the Korean War and
Vietnam War. The most noticeable feature about Alderville is the
large war memorial that stands at the crossroads of Highway 45
and County Road 18. The community fondly refers to it as “the
monument.” The naming of our waterfront territory as “Vimy
Ridge” also dates back to the time of World War I.

Vimy Ridge was named for the site in France where a famous
battle was fought in World War I. This battle was led by
Canadian soldiers who bravely fought their way to victory. Many
of these soldiers were either injured or lost their lives.
