WORDS TO KNOW Every Civic Holiday weekend in August, a Regatta is held on
the water at Vimy Ridge. At the Regatta, there are different
gunwale: the upper edge of a
boat’s side types of canoe races, such as the crab race, the married couple
Regatta: boat races race, the war canoe (four men or four women) race, and the
                                                  gunwale race.

In a gunwale race, the individual stands with one foot on each
edge of the canoe and has to paddle the canoe to the finish line.
It is a lot of fun to watch because it is hard to paddle a canoe
like this; sometimes the paddler falls into the water.

Other Regatta races include swimming races for all ages. In
recent years, fewer people have been attending the Regatta.
However, as more of our people become interested in our
culture, the attendance at our annual powwow continues
                                                  to grow.
