Our Stories
The Monument – Then and Now
onstruction of the
monument began on
August 21, 1927. Clarence
Cand Alf McKeel, two men
from Campbellford, Ontario,
designed the monument
and offered advice on its
construction. Many local
volunteers provided the
labour, including the men
who mixed the cement and
the women who cooked their
meals. In less than five weeks,
volunteers poured almost
425 thousand kilograms
of concrete to create the
monument that stands almost
15 metres tall.
The Alderville War Monument
was unveiled on September 25,
1927, to almost 3000 people
from Alderville and
neighbouring communities.
They gathered to remember
those who served in World
War II. A British blimp visiting
Canada at the time passed
over and tipped its nose to
the monument to honour
Alderville’s contributions to
the war.
