The Monument
The monument was built with one
plaque on the monument that lists
the 33 men who served in World
War I (including the 9 men who
were killed in action). A second
plaque was added years later to
honour those who served and died
in World War II and in Vietnam.
Symbols on the monument include
three large pillars representing
faith, hope, and charity; links on a
chain that stand for each person
who served; and nine cubes that
represent each person in the
community who died serving in
World War I.
The War memorial has come to be a symbol of all our people
who enlisted in the Armed Forces and fought in armed conflicts
since the time it was built. As stated on our community’s
website, “Today, the Cenotaph is still cherished by the members
of the community. Every year on November 11, the community
gathers at the Cenotaph to pay their respects to the men and
women who participated in the wars. Alderville First Nation will
always remember those who died for our freedom.”
