Employment
Travelling to work from our island presents some unique
challenges when it comes to employment!
Many of the people with jobs work on the island itself, either in
the Administration Building, the Health Centre, the school, or the
Child Care Centre. Employment in the Administration Building
includes jobs one would see in any town or city administration
building, such as working in the Finance Department or in the
Housing Department.
Other sources of employment on the island include:
• First Nation services such as water treatment and policing
• the ferry/shuttle service at the Marina—these employees are
required to have special training to work on a ferry system
• small businesses such as the Neezh Meegwunun
Family Campground
• creating and selling our own crafts and baked goods
Tourism and related jobs in the cottage industry, such as building
and repairing cottages, employ many people seasonally.
On the mainland, the Island View Business Centre, located at our
ferry dock, has several businesses and services that provide jobs.
The Virginia Beach Marina employs maintenance workers and
people who provide gas to land and marine vehicles. Tobacco
Trails and the Boondocks Eatery hire salespeople and restaurant
workers. With the 2017 opening of a public bus stop at the ferry
landing, more people may soon be employed on the mainland.
