Transportation
Prior to the 1920s, Lake Simcoe was 2 to 3 metres shallower than
it is today. Islanders could walk quite easily between Georgina
Island and the mainland. These qualities made living on the
island more desirable and were the main reason Georgina Island
was settled.
Permanent flooding caused by the Trent Severn Waterway
system eroded our land base and washed away its traditional
ankle-deep footpath, cutting us off from the mainland. The
transportation we use now to cross the lake depends on
the season.
Georgina Island is accessible
by car ferry in the spring,
KBC Photography leaves from the southwest tip
summer, and fall. The car ferry
of the island and docks on the
mainland at the small hamlet
of Virginia Beach.
