Due to constantly relying on the ferry schedule, we are often
on the island, looking to spend time with our family and friends.
While the isolation may be seen as a disadvantage, it also
contributes to the high regard for family and community life.
Everyone is happy once the ice road is in and we can travel on
our own schedule, not on the boat or scoot schedule! Travel by
car, though, is not always easy and safe. Over the years, there
have been several serious accidents, and many lives have been
tragically lost attempting to travel across the ice.
Community members, such as
the man in this picture, are often
called to help pull out vehicles that
belong to other people who are
less familiar with the ice.
As one community member said, “Lake Simcoe affects our lives
on a daily basis, whether it’s crossing the lake on an ice road,
on a four-wheeler, on a scoot, or in a boat. The lake provides
endless hours of recreation year-round but there is a constant
underlying respect for the lake. Safety is always an issue,
and the community has experienced times of tragic loss on
Lake Simcoe.”
