A wood carving by Randy King
We also have self-employed artisans, such as wood carver WORDS TO KNOW
Randy King; custom leather worker Adelie Monague; and Melvin artisans: people who are skilled
King, who makes ash baskets, and quill boxes of porcupine in crafts
quills and birch bark. All of these artisans offer their work for
sale. Finally, there are a number of members who bid to provide
services, such as catering for community gatherings or meetings.

Some of the members of our community choose to work
elsewhere. There are some hardy souls who travel back and forth
daily on the boat to work in places such as the Georgian Bay
Native Friendship Centre or the Georgian Bay Native Women’s
Association in Midland. They also work in a variety of other
positions in local businesses in nearby towns, such as Casino
                  Rama in Rama.

Living on an island presents some unique challenges when it
comes to employment! To help meet these challenges, we have
a Career/Adult Learning Centre, which offers people assistance
with furthering their education and finding jobs.
