Employment
We have many people working in our community. Some of the
employers on Christian Island come from other communities, but
most employers are our own community members.
A number of people are employed in the community services
provided on Christian Island.
• Administration Building employees include the First Nation
Administrator who oversees all First Nation business;
managers for the areas of Membership, Lands, and Housing;

oversees the operations and three crews of six people each.
• The Anishinabek Police Services includes a court worker and
three officers.
• Our Volunteer Fire Department and First Response Team are
all trained and skilled people from our community.
• Our Public Works department hires people to
provide services such as road repair, and garbage and
recycling pickup.
We also have several small businesses that are owned by some
of our members and that employ lots of people. Some of the
businesses are seasonal and operate at their peak during the
WORDS TO KNOW summer months when cottagers and tourists visit the island. The
entrepreneurs: people who set number of small business owners/entrepreneurs is constantly
up and run their own business
growing as we develop new ways to use the resources available
to us.
Another small segment of the population works as commercial
fishermen. These members continue to fish our traditional waters
and sell their catch off the island. Fishing has always been an
important economic activity on the island, and a commercial
fishery has existed here from the time our people moved to
Christian Island.
