Our Stories
A Day in the Life
of a Secondary School Student
y name is Natalya Assance. I reside on Christian Island, as
I have done all my life. I am currently going into Grade 12
and I attend Georgian Bay District Secondary School
M(GBDSS) in Midland, Ontario.
Five days a week, I spend 10 hours away from home to go
to school. It can be long and boring at times. Each morning, I
wake up at 7:00 a.m. and prepare to catch the ferry that leaves
Christian Island at 7:30 a.m. This 15- to 20-minute boat ride is a
good time for me to talk to my friends before I get to school.
When I get off the ferry, I have to ride on a bus in order to get
to school. It usually takes 35 to 40 minutes to reach GBDSS, as
we make one stop on our way.
Classes at GBDSS start at 8:55 a.m. so I have a limited amount
of time to spend talking to friends or teachers. My first class is
cooking. It is a three-hour long class, but it’s a pretty easy class
and it goes by fast. After the three hours, I have one hour for
lunch, followed by two classes.
Then it’s time to travel again, which usually seems pretty short.
I enjoy the bus ride. Once I get to Cedar Point, I get on the boat
right away. While I wait on the boat, I just talk to friends about
my day.
By the time I get home, it is 4:30 in the afternoon. My day
doesn’t seem too long if I hang out with friends when
I’m travelling.
