Transportation

Life in our community centres around the fact that we are on an
island! Whatever we need to do, we must plan ahead for. When
we go shopping, it is a good idea to take a list to make sure we
buy everything we need. Although the variety store does have
some basic items should we run out, for other items, we would
have to take the ferry back into town.

We have two ferry boats. One is called the Indian Maiden
and carries up to 70 passengers. The other is called the Sandy
Graham and can transport up to 99 passengers and 26 vehicles.
The ferries run on a schedule that includes 12 trips daily to the
mainland. Our First Nation also offers a shuttle bus service to
take our members from the ferry stop into the local urban centre
for shopping or appointments. The schedule of the ferries and
the bus can sometimes change due to weather conditions.

Usually, both ferries run throughout the winter, which means
that at times, they need to break ice to keep the path open. On
many of those icy, wintry days, the boat crews must first chip
away the ice that has built up on the boats before they can
                  go anywhere!
                                                                                  Indian Maiden
