Education

John Loukes and his 1954 class at the Alnwick Indian Day School
Our people have a proud history of education in our community
that goes back well before we settled in Alderville.

Alderville had a school that opened in the early 1900s and closed
in 1967. The school closed as part of the Canadian government’s
attempts at the time to absorb First Nations into the general
population. In this case, Alderville students began to attend the
local public school in the town of Roseneath.

We had our own teacher from Alderville First Nation beginning
in 1936. His name was John D. Loukes, and he taught in our
community from 1936 until 1964. The example set by him and
other people in our community who went on to further their
education has set a standard and a strong message about the
importance our First Nation places on continuing education.
