retail location in Alderville.
Employment and Economic
Development
Our most important resources are our land and our people.
Leasing land to non-Indigenous farmers has provided income for
some of our members for many years. Our people use their skills
in a variety of jobs both on and off the First Nation. On the First
Nation, many of the people in Alderville work in the community
service organizations such as the Alderville Administration Office
(our community’s city hall), the Health Centre, and the Child Care
Centre. Off-territory, they find employment in retail, construction
and trades, and professions such as those found in education.
WORDS TO KNOW
We also have skilled business people running a variety of resources: supplies that meet
a need
businesses such as various retail shops, including craft shops,
stewardship: the job of taking
restaurants, and a hair studio. Several people run small
care of something
businesses from their homes, such as catering.
Tourism is an important part of the economic life of our
community. Several of our members offer nature tours and
culture workshops. We are also home to several members who
make their living as artists on the First Nation. Rick Beaver is
one of the most well-known of these artists. As we continue to
grow and develop new projects as a community, including the
stewardship of the Black Oak Savanna and our solar farm, we
will be turning to our younger people to provide the skills we
need for these projects.
