In all areas where wild rice grows, recreational users of our
waterways in Ontario tend to remove manoomin from its natural
habitat because it tangles up in boat motors and people do not
like to swim in it. It is not easy to balance the need to protect
this gift with the recreational needs of Ontarians.

Manoomin beds are monitored closely every year. First Nation
members check on many of the rice beds during the summer by
canoe. Members update maps and make general observations
on fish and wildlife. Later, they update each other on the status
of the main beds and where the best places are to harvest.

Wild rice harvesting usually starts around the end of August or

healthy. It is low in fat, and Anishinaabemowin. If the weather is favourable, harvesting can
high in protein, B vitamins, continue until mid-September.
