Invasive Species Roadside
Mapping Project.
ABOS does a lot of educational work with local schools and
interest groups. Many young students spend time at the
savanna. ABOS offers programs that explore the diverse
ecosystem that the site offers, as well as programs that promote
native plant gardening. They team up with local knowledge
keepers to teach about Anishinaabe culture and traditions. In
addition, they do a number of outreach and volunteer events
and workshops on plants and animals and managing wildlife.
ABOS employs skilled workers from our community as part of
its team. For example, Alderville member Cheyenne Blaker is
currently working at ABOS on a three-year invasive species
roadside mapping project. Cheyenne became interested in the
black oak savanna as a young woman and went on to study
ecosystem management at Fleming College.
