The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation provides services
and programming to serve and support our community. It
is important to us to make sure we deliver our programs
and services in a caring way that includes our cultural and
traditional values.
Our First Nation is the main employer on the reserve. Fifty staff
members work at our Administration Offices, Public Works,
and the Health and Resource Centre. In addition, we have an
Employment and Economic Development Officer who assists
community members in gaining skills and finding work.
We are a progressive and growing community that promotes
relationships and partnerships so that our community can do
well for years to come. At the heart of economic activity in the
community is the Great Blue Heron Casino. The casino started
as a vision of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation. The
goal was to provide a plan that would provide opportunity and

through an agreement with Casinos Austria International. The
casino opened in 1997.
In 2016, we formed the Noozhoo Nokiiyan Limited Partnership
(NNLP) with the purpose of creating sustainable long-term
wealth that reflects Anishinaabe traditions and values. All
economic and sustainable businesses and investments are
overseen by NNLP.
In 2017, our First Nation and NNLP celebrated the grand opening
of our first retail plaza. It features a Tim Hortons restaurant,
Minisi Convenience and Gifts store, and Fill-Up Fuels gas station.
The gas station is owned by a member of the First Nation who
has another gas station located on reserve.
There are many plans for economic development. Our people are
our greatest resource, and we are committed to developing the
skills and training we need to fulfill our promise and be a part of
Canada’s workforce.
