Our Stories
A Day in the Life of a
Grade 6 Student
ike all our students in Mississaugas of Scugog Island First
Nation, Adam wakes up early in the morning during the
school year to catch the bus to S. A. Cawker Public School
Lin Port Perry. Even the Kindergarten children wake up early
to catch the bus each day. We are only a 15-minute drive away
from the school, but the bus trip takes over an hour on the
route to pick up our children and deliver them to the school.
Adam’s mother works at the Administration Building, so after
Adam gets on the bus in the morning, she is on her way to work.
Adam’s father works the night shift at Casino Rama, so he is
heading to bed as the rest of the family is starting the day.
Adam’s school day is very much like other Grade 6 students in
Ontario. He goes to class, eats lunch at school, and has fun at
recess. After school, he rides the bus home. When he arrives
back at Scugog, he and his friends head home for supper and
to do homework, but they generally come to the Health and
Resource Centre after supper for programs that offer traditional
teaching and a variety of other activities. These activities include
a basketball game, a craft, or tutoring. One night a week, there
is an activity at the Centre for our youth—a basketball game, a
craft, or a movie. Otherwise, our youth visit friends, or ride their
bikes and just hang out before heading home for the evening.
It is usually pretty early when Adam gets home, since the alarm
goes off early in the morning for the bus!
