The Great Blue Heron Casino is one of the biggest employers
in Durham Region. When it opened, there were only
245 employees. It currently employs over 1100 staff members.
Currently, about 10 of our people are employed there. Overall,
11 percent of the casino workforce comes from First Nations.

When we first opened the casino, people living in the area
outside our community were very worried about the impact
of the casino on their lifestyle. They thought it would bring
too much traffic and attract the wrong kind of people to our
neighbourhood, but none of these things have been a problem.
The outside communities have benefited directly from the
casino revenues, and they are supportive of it now. Expansion
of the casino is now underway. Construction has begun on a
100-bed hotel, additional space for the games, and a 500-seat
entertainment centre.
