Scone.
WORDS TO KNOW At our community feasts, you are likely to find some of our
favourite foods such as, wild rice, fish, bkwezhigan (scone or
hominy: dried corn with the
hulls removed, which we bannock or bread), berries, and moose meat. Other favourite
purchase from other First
foods include the following:
Nations, ethnic supermarkets,
or from ethnic sections • scone dogs – hot dogs wrapped in scone and fried
of supermarkets
• corn soup – made using a type of canned or frozen corn
scone (scawn): a type of baked
or fried bread called hominy
• Indian tacos – made like tacos but placed in scone shells
instead of tortillas
• fried bologna – another favourite eaten with scone
We also eat many of the same foods as other Canadians.
Catalin Petolea/Shutterstock Barbecued steak and corn on the cob are summer favourites.
Turkey, mashed potatoes, and cranberries are generally served
at Thanksgiving and Christmas. As in many other communities,
parents on Scugog Island First Nation are forever reminding our
children that it’s not a good thing to eat too much junk food!
The store on the island offers a variety of convenience foods,
but most people choose to do their weekly grocery shopping
in the nearby town of Port Perry or in the cities of Oshawa
and Whitby.
