                                                  Scone.

                  WORDS TO KNOW                   At our community feasts, you are likely to find some of our
                                                  favourite foods such as, wild rice, fish, bkwezhigan (scone or
                  hominy: dried corn with the
                  hulls removed, which we         bannock or bread), berries, and moose meat. Other favourite
                  purchase from other First
                                                  foods include the following:
                  Nations, ethnic supermarkets,
                  or from ethnic sections         •  scone dogs – hot dogs wrapped in scone and fried
                  of supermarkets
                                                  •  corn soup – made using a type of canned or frozen corn
                  scone (scawn): a type of baked
                  or fried bread                      called hominy
                                                  •  Indian tacos – made like tacos but placed in scone shells
                                                      instead of tortillas
                                                  •  fried bologna – another favourite eaten with scone

                                                  We also eat many of the same foods as other Canadians.

                                                  Turkey, mashed potatoes, and cranberries are generally served
                                                  at Thanksgiving and Christmas. As in many other communities,
                                                  parents on Scugog Island First Nation are forever reminding our
                                                  children that it’s not a good thing to eat too much junk food!

                                                  The store on the island offers a variety of convenience foods,
                                                  but most people choose to do their weekly grocery shopping
                                                  in the nearby town of Port Perry or in the cities of Oshawa
                                                  and Whitby.
