Connections to Land
On chart paper, record some of the connections between the dances
and land:
1. stomping down the grass
2. women keeping feet in touch with Mother Earth
3. grass dancers’ connection to Alderville’s Tall Grass Savannah (Black
Oak Savannah)
4. women’s traditional dance with soft steps on Mother Earth
5. Butterfly Dance imitating the movement of butterflies. Butterflies
are native to Alderville’s Black Oak Savannah.

instructions to the best of their ability (e.g., only upper body)
• Students can work with partners or in groups to create Venn
diagrams to engage in conversational comparison without having
to write or record their thoughts. Alternatively, a scribe could be
used for this portion if applicable.
• Provide choice in assessment activities
• Students can view videos as a whole group, in small groups, or
individually with headphones
