First Nations Land Management Act
Did you know that First Nations people don’t own land in the
WORDS TO KNOW same way other Canadians do? Our land is held by the Crown.
We don’t hold land privately like people in our neighbouring
Crown: the source of power to
govern a country communities. In surrounding towns and villages, people buy
or sell title to parcels of land. Title is registered and managed
by the government of Ontario. For instance, if a family in Port
Perry owns a house, they most likely purchased the land that
the house sits on. This family can sell this land to others freely or
keep it and pass it along to someone else.
In our First Nations communities, we have families who hold a
Certificate of Allocation for the parcel of land their house sits on,
but Certificate of Allocation is not quite like title. We can sell our
parcel only to other members of our First Nation. We can lease
our parcel to anyone, including people who are not members of
our First Nation.
