Land Use
Land in our First Nation is used by our community and individual
members in different ways. Our land is also used by our WORDS TO KNOW
members and by the non-Indigenous people around us. We
non-Indigenous: someone
have rented or leased farmland to the surrounding community whose ancestors are not
since 1843, where local non-Indigenous farmers grow hay. They First Nation
pay a yearly amount to the community or to individuals for
the use of the land. These leases apply to a small amount of
our territory.
Although some of our members have farmed in the past, none
of our members are currently farming. We use our land for
housing and for First Nation-operated projects. Our buildings
include the following:
• an Administration Building with offices for the Chief and
Council, and services such as Finance and Lands
• a Health and Resource Centre where gatherings and
projects such as cultural programming and health promotion
services occur; this building also has a large hall for
community meetings
• a Public Works Building with offices for construction, water
treatment, housing, and maintenance
Land is also used for our retail plaza and the Great Blue Heron
Casino. There are also sections of our territory that are used for
housing, and sections that are held by individual First Nation
members and remain in a natural state.
