Tradition and Culture
Chippewas of Rama First Nation is rich in culture and tradition
based on our place at the Narrows. Our logo speaks to the
direct ties we keep and pass on. It captures the deer, which
is the symbol of the clan of the community, the Hoof clan,
with a bright sun behind. It is based on the artwork of Theresa
Desormeaux, who was unaware that Chief Yellowhead spoke Part of our tradition includes

as beadwork, leatherwork, and basket making.
Our logo was born out of a particularly inspiring community workshop in the 1980s. At the
workshop, Rama member and artist Theresa Desormeaux created the artwork, above, that
eventually became our logo. In an interesting coincidence, Chief Yellowhead spoke about the
Hoof clan with the sun behind it many years before. The artist did not know this when she
created her piece.
