Tradition and Culture
We have a rich history of culture and tradition. Some of the
differences from a non-Indigenous community that you might
spot on our island include the four colours of man that are
featured on the First Nations Territory sign, and the large dream
catcher that can be seen from the ferry landing. Before a recent
roof replacement, there was a large thunderbird design on the
Administration Building roof.
Our culture and traditions are also carried on through some of
our activities. Some of our members work with natural materials
to produce beautiful traditional items such as black ash baskets
and birch bark boxes decorated with porcupine quills. Some
of our members harvest leaves and roots, which we use as
WORDS TO KNOW simple remedies. For example, the root of the sweet flag plant,
which we call wiikenh, is harvested and used as a remedy for
wiikenh (wee-ken): sweet
flag plant chest colds.
