Gatherings
Many cultural events on Christian Island are enjoyed by all. Some
of these events occur every year. In 1996, the former Governor
General of Canada announced that June 21 would be known
as National Aboriginal Day, now known as National Indigenous

Christian Island hosts a powwow every year in July; we call it
“Island in the Sun.” It is a very special event. In addition to this
event, our school, Christian Island Elementary School, hosts a
powwow in May. The school invites local school children and
other people from the community to join in the fun.
“Little Christmas” is another favourite event in our community.
It is held at the Community Hall on January 6 of each year.
There is a feast where we enjoy turkey and other kinds of meat,
potatoes, salads, vegetables, and many delicious desserts. A
special ceremony follows the feast during which First Nations
names are given to those who request them.
