CONNECTING TO
TRADITION
Moose Deer Point recently held
a hunt camp in the community.
This camp brought together youth
and adults to take care of deer
that had been brought down by a
community hunter. At this camp,
the community gathered to show its
youngest members how the meat in
their cooking pots gets there. They
demonstrated how the parts of the
animal are made useful, especially
the hide.
The camp touched on something
at the very heart of Moose Deer
Point. It illustrated to everyone how
important the transfer of hunting
skills are to the community. It also
illustrated how close community
members still are to a way of life
that includes hunting and fishing.
The camp showed everyone how
ready the adults are to teach this
way of life, and how ready the
kids are to learn. In doing this, the
community is ensuring that this
special knowledge is not lost...
