Beausoleil First Nation is governed by an elected Chief and six
Councillor Hank Monague,
councillors. One of the councillors is the “Chief Councillor,” or Councillor Kristin Monague,
second-in-command. Usually, the councillor receiving the most Councillor Angela Beedie;

votes becomes the Chief Councillor. The council uses a portfolio
system, not unlike the Canadian government, with each
councillor taking on the responsibility for a specific area, such as

Our present-day First Nations model of government was aimed toward reaching a goal
established by the Indian Act in 1876 and revised several times candidates: people who run for
since then (see page 66 of the Resource section for more a public position
information about the Indian Act). Elections are held every two nominated: when someone’s
name is entered in an election
years. They follow CIRNAC guidelines, where candidates are
portfolio: area of responsibility
nominated, a campaign is run, and votes are cast, much as any
election held in Canada.
