Community Artists
Our community has a rich tradition of expressing culture through
art. In the past, carvers and traditional craftspeople made items
such as moccasins and beadwork. Ina Goose, Eva Marsden,
and Claude and Jess Marsden were the last members of our
community to make the kind of beautiful baskets that are now
found only in museums. Carver George Edgar gave his beautiful
woodcarvings to friends around the country. Most were done by
free hand.
Today, we have young visual artists who are finding success in
the art world. Award-winning artist Justice Colwell has displayed
his work in Canada, Great Britain, and Japan. Luke Swinson
currently lives in Kitchener, Ontario. He creates fine art based on
his Anishinaabe culture. In 2018, he created an art installation in
Waterloo’s town square. Jewellery maker and muralist Sharifah
Marsden is committed to passing on traditional skills.
Justice Colwell creates photo-based art.
