established by the Indian Act in 1876 and revised several times

Scugog First Nation is governed by a Chief and two councillors.
Any First Nation member may run for Chief or Councillor, no
matter where he or she lives. Under the Indian Act, anyone,
whether they are a First Nations member or not, may run for
Chief. All members over the age of 18 may vote, even if they live
elsewhere. There are different viewpoints on whether people
who don’t live in the community should be able to vote.
