Although the United Church is very much a part of the lives
of many of our members, a return to the beliefs and spiritual
practices that connect us to each other and the world around
us is on the rise. Some attend church and also practise different

WORDS TO KNOW
wiingushk (ween-gush-k):
sweetgrass
Wiingushk (sweetgrass) is one of
four of our sacred medicines, along
with sage, tobacco, and cedar. It
represents kindness and strength.
It is often burned on its own or
in combination with the others
to create a smoke medicine that
we call a “smudge.” We smudge
ourselves to clear negative energy
and thoughts.
